Areas My research is broadly focused on the neurobiology of learning and memory. The specific goal of my research is to explore the involvement of nicotinic cholinergic function in hippocampal-dependent learning. Recently, I have begun investigating the capacity for voluntary exercise interventions to engage the nicotinic cholinergic system. A parallel line of research is aimed at characterizing a potential rodent model of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

To achieve my research goals, I utilize a number of behavioral tasks including classical eyeblink conditioning, fear conditioning, and spatial learning tasks that variously recruit prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and caudate nucleus. I also use pharmacological techniques (e.g. intracranial infusions), single unit recording, quantitative neuroanatomy, and a variety of molecular techniques (e.g. western blotting and quantitative PCR) to establish the neurobiological mechanisms thought to underlie the learning and memory effects I observe in my animals.
