Carol Miller, Ph.D.
Carol's research has focused on how stigmatized people cope with the stigma they face, with particular emphasis on coping efforts that promote resilience by mitigating the effects of stigma on interpersonal interactions.
Elizabeth Pinel, Ph.D.
Liz's work on coping has been conducted in collaboration with Jennifer Bosson, currently a faculty member at the University of South Florida. Together we focus on the types of support messages people provide those in the process of coping with a negative life event. We have an especial interest in minimization messages, or, messages that downplay the severity of the negative event. To date we have learned that such messages do more harm than good, primarily because they interrupt the coping process.
