The Human Behavioral Pharmacology Subprogram
- Vermont Center on Behavior and Health (main): The Vermont Center on Behavior and Health (VCBH) is an interdisciplinary center of research excellence committed to investigating relationships between personal behavior patterns (i.e., lifestyle) and risk for chronic disease and premature death. Unhealthy behaviors (e.g., tobacco and other substance abuse, physical inactivity, obesity, risky sexual behavior) represent the leading cause of chronic disease and premature deaths in the U.S. and are a major driver behind spiraling health-care costs. Importantly, these risk behaviors are overrepresented among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations and are major contributors to the problem of health disparities. There is a tremendous need for greater scientific understanding of the mechanisms underpinning vulnerability to these risk behaviors and for more effective interventions and policies to promote healthy behavior. The VCBH will leverage knowledge from the disciplines of behavioral economics and behavioral pharmacology to better understand and support healthy behavior change.
- The Human Behavioral Pharmacology Laboratory (main): This facility of 5743 sq. ft., is located adjacent to the University of Vermont (UVM) campus in Burlington and is the site for laboratory research on the reinforcing effects of drugs, and dependence and withdrawal. We also have onsite, state-of-the-art urine toxicology testing equipment and access to a new neuroimaging research facility at the University hospital. Laboratories are controlled by networked microcomputers.
- Substance Abuse Treatment Center (SATC): This facility of 2,900 sq. ft., is also located adjacent to the UVM campus, and is our site for the development and testing of scientifically-based behavioral treatments for cocaine dependence and new pharmacological and behavioral treatments for opioid dependence.
- Chittenden Clinic provides methadone maintenance therapy for those with opioid dependence. The program offers a safe, confidential, and non-judgmental environment for patients. Services may include methadone maintenance therapy, individual and group therapy sessions, and medical consultation/dose adjustments as needed.
