Department of Psychology
The Clinical Training Program
Model Ph.D. Program Schedule
Model Ph.D. Program Schedule
Timeline
The Department recognizes that timelines may vary as a function of the nature of the individual's research. Note: After the first year many courses are taught in alternating years; therefore, the model program will have to be adapted for when courses are offered.
Students entering the program with graduate course work in psychology from another university often can transfer credits to fulfill program requirements. Students with a completed Master's Degree from another university often can complete their program one year sooner than those times indicated below. Guidelines for developing and completing the second year project (equivalent to a master's thesis) and dissertation are as follows:
- Begin to develop the second year research proposal during the first year, formally propose the project at the beginning of the second semester of year two.
- Defend the project by the end of the second year of study.
- Formally propose the Ph.D. dissertation during the third year, and no later than November 1 of the fourth year of study.
- Defend the Ph.D. dissertation during the fourth (or fifth) year of study.

Notes
- A total of 20 hours required. Scholarships are available to cover the cost of these credits depending on type of financial support. When the 20 hours of GRAD 491 should be taken will vary depending on type of financial support, course requirements and other factors. Taking as many of these hours as soon as possible is important!
- Credits taken during summer count towards those allowed in the following academic year. Over 12 months, a total of 24 credits can be taken on a GTA and 26 credits can be taken at an in-state rate on a GRA/clinical placement.
- Electives need to add up to 9 hours. Electives can consist of 1, 2, or 3 hour courses.
