Official Retirement Citation (2006)
Dr. Marc Kessler, you left the Nebraska plains for Vermont's green mountains in 1969. Over the course of 37 years you contributed to the training of clinical psychologists who have become leaders and visionaries in our discipline. A review of the roster of Vermont's mental health policy makers and mental health service providers reveal the results of your skillful tutelage. Your profound influence is not limited to our state's boundaries. Your former students are working across the country and in international settings as well.
The combination of your keen ethical eye and respect for a multidisciplinary approach to healing, psychological assessment, intervention and treatment have helped shape the Department of Psychology.
If we encountered you as an undergraduate in Introduction to Clinical Psychology, as a graduate student in Interpersonal Psychotherapy or as a colleague at a faculty meeting we always carried an acorn of new knowledge that would take root, grow, and shape our future behavior. To learn from you was never limited to being in your presence. Your teaching continued well after you were out of sight.
As one of the pillars of the Behavior Therapy and Psychotherapy Center you helped to build a unique clinical training model that will thrive long after your departure. As a former member of the Vermont Board of Psychological Examiners you ensured that psychologists practicing in this state were skilled, sound, and principled. Your leadership and expertise in group dynamics extends beyond Vermont because of your association with the A.K. Rice Institute.
Mark Twain said, "Always do what is right: this will gratify some people and astonish the rest." Dr. Marc Kessler, you have gratified and astonished us. Thank you and happy travels.
