Official Retirement Citation (2003)
Lawrence R. Gordon, you have served the University of Vermont with distinction for 33 years. During those years the University has benefited from your insightful, conscientious, and effective contributions. You have served on many committees at all levels: as Acting Chair of your department, Director of its graduate program in experimental psychology, and currently as Director of its undergraduate programs.
Your broad training in quantitative methods led you to an interesting and varied research career. These included basic research in environmental cognition, the ecology of in vivo barroom drinking behavior, and human decision making; as well as developing and evaluating community care facilities for mentally retarded adults, evaluating client services for the Vermont Department of Mental Health, studies on the employment and independent living status of handicapped youth after high school, and a five-state evaluation of supported housing projects for psychiatrically disabled adults living in the community.
You helped develop a course that was among the first in the nation to integrate the teaching of research methods, statistics, and basic experimental psychology into a single course sequence, and you took a long-dormant course in thinking and developed it into a modern course in cognitive psychology. At the graduate level, you have taught advanced statistics and measurement, and have served on research committees for 40 Masters theses and 120 Doctoral dissertations.
As majors in the department surpassed 400 students, you worked to create a Psychology Club and to establish a chapter of Psi Chi, the National Honor Society in Psychology. Since 1997, it has inducted 250 members.
Lawrence R. Gordon, your colleagues and students thank you for your continuous devotion to psychology and the intellectual tools you have provided others to learn and to succeed in their studies and research endeavors. Your commitment to the University, your wonderful smile and your hearty laugh will always be a part of the UVM Psychology Department.
