I served as an Extension Horticulture Specialist at the University of Vermont for 35 years until my June 2016 retirement.  In my Extension role, I provided information and programming to the industry of Vermont, region, and North America.

Home gardeners in Vermont and surrounding areas know me from my frequent television appearances on the regional Across the Fence program, periodic radio interviews, and monthly news articles.  Many people join me yearly on local and regional gardening tours.  As a Professor, I led an active research program on all aspects of perennial production and overwintering, and continue to collaborate with Burlington Parks and Recreation on the Waterfront Display Gardens featuring new annual flowers.

I teach online courses each semester, topics range from indoor plants to outdoor flowers, fruits and vegetables, pollinator perennials, hops and herbs. I am also launching a certificate series of these for non-credit.

My book, The Fruit Gardener’s Bible from Storey Publishing, a 4-color total revision of Lewis Hill’s Fruits and Berries for the Home Garden, was published in January 2012 and is in its second printing.

Serve as Horticulturist in Residence for the King’s Garden at Fort Ticonderoga.
