It is my great pleasure to serve the University of Vermont as Provost and Senior Vice President. The University of Vermont, as one of the nation’s oldest and most respected universites, boasts more than 220 years of scholarly contributions, learned discourse, innovation, and impact on higher education nationally.
The distinguished faculty at the University of Vermont are passionate about their teaching and scholarship. Few universities can boast a stronger, more authentic commitment to the Teacher-Scholar model than UVM. This is to be cherished, nurtured, and celebrated. Equally important must be our shared commitment to academic rigor, measurable quality, impact, value, and access. The University of Vermont is a leading public research university and a land-grant university, with liberal education at its core and a deep and abiding commitment to preparing integrative thinkers with global perspective, respect for people and cultures, and a passion for learning. It is essential that we demonstrate that we are succeeding in our shared goals, our stated mission, and our aspirations as a great university.
Higher education in the United States has entered an entirely new era. In part due to financial constraints and other challenges brought on by the recent recession, in part due to changes in pedagogical as well as institutional models (including new modes for delivery of instruction and efforts to reach new audiences as part of our mission), and in part due to changes in students’ expectations and even the way students learn – universities operate very differently today than they did even ten years ago. They are being asked to do more, to broaden their reach, and above all to increase access. This requires universities to think and act strategically, to manage resources responsibly and sustainably, and to make richly informed decisions and sometimes difficult choices. We will do this together – as an academic community – with mutual respect, a shared vision and commitment to academic excellence at UVM, and in a way that both nurtures and celebrates what makes our community special.
Thank you for your commitment, your engagement, and your willingness to help shape the future of our great university. Together, we have the opportunity to craft an even more exciting future for UVM – with academic programs that are distinctive and distinguished – based on shared goals, shared aspirations, and shared achievements.
