Professor Commercio specializes in comparative politics, and focuses on issues related to regime transition, ethnic politics, and gender and religion in post-Soviet states. Her work appears in Political Science Quarterly, Studies in Comparative International Development, Nationalities Papers, and Problems of Post-Communism. Professor Commercio's book, "Russian Minority Politics in Post-Soviet Latvia and Kyrgyzstan: The Transformative Power of Informal Networks," was published in 2010 with the University of Pennsylvania Press. Her new project analyzes Kyrgyz and Tajik women and why they pursue Islamic education in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, respectively.
