Major Requirements

Undergraduate Programs in Philosophy


Students may pursue Majors or Minors in Philosophy.  Specific course selections are made by students, in consultation with their advisors, to fit the the students' interests.  Courses taken for a Major or Minor in Philosophy must meet the following guidelines:
 

Major Requirements:

Students majoring in philosophy must complete 30 hours in the department including:

(1)  101 (History of Ancient Philosophy) and 102 (History of Modern Philosophy); and

(2)   A total of at least four 200-level courses in philosophy.

Students considering graduate work are urged to take Philosophy 13 (Introduction to Logic) and to study a foreign language.

Minor Requirements:

Students minoring in philosophy must take:

(1)  One course from: 101 (History of Ancient Philosophy), 102 (History of Modern Philosophy) or 140 (Social and Political Philosophy);

(2)  One course at the 200-level; and

(3)  Twelve additional hours in Philosophy, at  least three of which must be at the 100-level or above.
