What Do Philosophy Majors Do After Leaving UVM?

A major in philosophy can prepare one to go on to do graduate work in philosophy, and ultimately, to teach philosophy. But there is more to it than that. Most of our majors do not go on to become philosophy professors. Philosophy is widely recognized to provide students with very fine training in thinking issues through clearly, identifying the reasons which count for and against various views, and clearly explaining those reasons. These skills are applicable to many different professions, and many professions are represented in the careers our students have chosen.

A number of our majors have gone on to graduate school in philosophy, at, for instance, Cornell, Harvard, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin, University of Illinois at Chicago, University of Chicago, and Syracuse University. Some have already become philosophy professors, at, for example, University of Wisconsin, Bowdoin College, and Wake Forest University. Many of our majors have become lawyers, and some have become physicians. We also have students who, although they majored in philosophy, went on to do graduate work in other areas, including marine biology, psychology, computer science, religion and English. There are several who have gone on to receive master's degrees in public administration, and one who is in graduate school for academic administration.

We have a number of students who have gone into journalism, one of whom received the Pulitzer Prize for explanatory journalism, and is now a reporter for the New York Times. Our alumni include a minister, a software designer, a commodities trader, a few actors, an opera singer, a secondary school teacher, and a few people who went into business, including some who have started their own businesses. All in all, it is a distinguished and varied group.

If there are any alumni reading this page who would like to tell us what they are doing now, please send e-mail to Philosophy.Department@uvm.edu.
