John Dewey Memorial Lecture Anil Gupta, University of Pittsburgh

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Location: Memorial Lounge, Waterman 338
Description: “Some Reflections on Empiricism”

Empiricists maintain that the rationality and content of our view of the world is grounded in experience. Their thesis is plainly attractive, but empiricists have faced severe difficulties in spelling out how experience grounds rationality and content. I’ll trace the source of these difficulties, and I’ll propose a new way of understanding the relationship of experience to judgment and content—a way that promises a reformed and attractive empiricism.

Anil Gupta (PhD, Pittsburgh, 1977) is the Alan Ross Anderson Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science, and a Fellow of the Center for Philosophy of Science at the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has taught at Indiana, Illinois at Chicago, and McGill. He is the author of The Logic of Common Nouns; Empiricism and Experience; Truth, Meaning, Experience; and a coauthor of The Revision Theory of Truth. Professor Gupta’s main research interests lie in logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics, and epistemology. Topics that are of special interest to him include definitions, truth, meaning, and perception.
