Phi Beta Kappa Room

Waterman Building

Room 527 Waterman was designated as the "Phi Beta Kappa Room" in 1948, part of the centennial celebration of the Alpha of Vermont, Phi Beta Kappa, chartered February 16, and formed March 7, 1848. Expenses for furnishing the room were covered by a generous gift from William P. Marsh, Class of 1895, and a plaque to this effect was placed over the fireplace. In September 1943 the Phi Beta Kappa chapter had acquired by purchase and gift some of the furniture from the study in Wheeler House, the room in which the chapter had been founded in 1848. In December 1943 the University Trustees declined to purchase Wheeler House (there were no funds available). In March 1944 the Phi Beta Kappa chapter voted to contribute to the fund being raised by friends of the University towards the purchase of Wheeler House. The fund-raising was successful, and the Trustees gratefully received a deed to the property in April 1944.

Control of the room rests with the Assistant Vice President for Administration and Facilities Services. All use of the room is scheduled through the Facilities Coordinator: 656-3044. The Phi Beta Kappa chapter invites a thoughtful respect to be accorded to artifacts placed within this room.
