Phi Beta Kappa December 2012 Induction Ceremony

Wednesday, 5 December at 7:30 pm in Billings North Lounge

The induction ceremony is open to all members of the UVM community and the guests of our initiates. We would be delighted to have you join us in celebrating the outstanding academic accomplishments of our initiates. December 5 is an important date for Phi Beta Kappa, as it was the day the induction ritual was first performed at the College of William & Mary, where the society was founded in 1776.

The ceremony will begin at 7:30 pm. Inductees are asked to arrive at Billings North Lounge by 7:15 pm, and faculty who are assisting with the ceremony should be there by 7:10.

A reception will follow the ceremony. All of the evening’s activities should be concluded by approximately 9 pm.

Attire. For the December ceremony, academic regalia will not be worn. Initiates may wear what they choose, though we encourage you to keep in mind that the induction is an important and formal (that is, serious) event.

Location & Parking. Billings North Lounge is located on the first floor of the Billings Center (University Place, next to Ira Allen Chapel) Limited on-street parking is available, and their are parking spaces for people with mobility issues adjacent to the building. After 6 pm, visitor parking is available at no charge in the Waterman parking lot and in the visitor parking lot across the green from Billings.

Photography. Guests are more than welcome to take pictures at the ceremony and to come forward to take closer shots when their student is receiving his or her key, etc.

Key Presentation. Family members or professors who are themselves members of Phi Beta Kappa may present the key to “their” student. Please come forward at the appropriate time in the ceremony (which should be made clear during the ceremony). If you are planning on doing this, it would be nice for the chapter president to know about it in advance so it can be most effectively integrated into the ceremony. Please email Prof. Nicole Phelps at phibeta@uvm.edu or let her know on 5 December before the start of the ceremony.
