Holistic Planned Grazing

Supported by a NESARE PDP grant, the Center is one of the regional partners training technical assistance providers better assist farmers to make grazing and other farm decisions that are aligned with their personal and professional goals.  The project is a partnership with Central New York RC&D Council, led by Troy Bishopp.

Our trainees represent NRCS, NRCD and Extension staff, consultants and farmers from NY, VT, NH, CT, and MA.  Some of the topics we have focused on have included:
  • Holistic goal setting and farm planning
  • The principles and practice of high-density grazing
  • Reading the biological landscape through four ecosystem processes
  • Planned grazing
  • Better communication for this project and our work generally
  • Applying these skills through on-farm technical assistance
  • Recording social and economic indicators measuring the effects of this holistic decision making
