Course Assessment and Credit:
In service-learning, students are graded/evaluated on the quality of the integration that they make between the service and the learning, NOT on the service performed itself. Instructors can evaluate reflection assignments, participation in class discussion, the effectiveness of group participation, etc.
Sample Criteria Questions for Assessing Learning:
- Are specific course concepts clearly identified and accurately defined?
- Are the concepts discussed in relation to the student's experiences a the site?
- Does the student reveal new insights or pose new questions as a result of their experiences at the site?
- Does the student use skills of analysis and critical thinking when discussing their experiences at the site?
