Asian Studies Outreach Program

ASOP Concluding Summer 2016

Press Release by Dr. Cynthia Gerstl-Pepin, Interim Dean

This year marks the final year for the amazing journey of the Asian Studies Outreach Program (ASOP) at the University of Vermont. The Freeman Foundation has supported ASOP with a generous $9,651,903 in funding since its inception.  While this is the last funding cycle, ASOP has provided hundreds of Vermont educators with the opportunity to travel to and teach about Asia in their classrooms and communities.  ASOP’s legacy of expanding the global vision and cultural understanding of Asia for Vermont educators, students, and leaders will live on through our program alumni throughout the state.  The Governor’s Institute of Vermont on Asian Cultures will continue the legacy by providing high school students a first-hand experiential learning opportunity to study Chinese cultures.

As we prepare to sunset the program on June 30, 2016, we will begin to organize the resources in ASOP Resource Library.  ASOP will hold two open houses to donate the teaching materials such as books, artifacts, and curriculum units, for the classroom use for Vermont teachers and educators. The first open house will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2015, and the second open house will be in March, 2016. This is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Asian Studies Outreach Program will conclude its final year with a daylong conference at the University of Vermont in the spring of 2016, celebrating the legacy and Asian Studies.  As we begin to assemble keynote speakers and workshops, we invite ASOP alumni to inform us of the topics that are of interest to them in a Limesurvey. More detail information will be announced in January 2016.
The final overseas program, the Institute on China and Its Cultures, will be led by Mr. Jim Avery, principal of Otter Valley Union High School. Applications can be found online and the deadline to apply is December 18, 2015.
All questions regarding library resources, workshops and the final conference can be directed to Jacqueline Drouin at 802-656-7985 or
Finally, I express deepest gratitude to all ASOP staff and Vermont educators who have been involved with ASOP activities over the years. Your tireless effort and dedications have delivered a quality and excellent educational experience to Vermont students.
