Research Integrity - Contaminated Cell Lines

A researcher who has used cell lines as a research tool for more than 40 years calls attention to the high and increasing level of cross-contaminated cell lines in cancer and other biomedical research that may have tainted up to 20% of publications and proposes a plan of action.  See html: http://ori.hhs.gov/education/CellContamination.shtml

New Research Policies

Three new research policies were enacted early summer 2006 dealing with Research Conflicts of Interest, Export Controls, and the Use of University Research Facilities.  The Office of Sponsored Programs is currently offering information sessions to update you on these new policies.  Click here to see more information and the schedule for these sessions.

New NIH Website for New Investigators

The Office of Extramural Research (OER), NIH, announces the posting of a new website that articulates NIH's continuing commitment to new investigators (see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/new_investigators/index.htm). The website describes current policies, data related to the influx of new investigators, resources that new investigators can use to understand and work with the NIH, and helpful hints that might be useful in constructing a first application for NIH support. The OER solicits additional suggestions for non-commercial content for this website. Visitors who know of additional resources can send suggestions to OEPMailbox@mail.nih.gov.

New On-line Subscription to The Grant Advisor Plus

The Office of Sponsored Programs is pleased to announce that UVM faculty, staff and students now have unlimited access to The Grant Advisor Plus (TGA Plus), an on-line resource for grants persons and faculty in higher education.

Access is available by going directly to the URL: www.grantadvisor.com
OR
by going through OSP's Webpage Link: http://www.uvm.edu/~ospuvm/  (click on "Funding Opportunities"; then "Funding Announcements")

TGA Plus gives a long-range overview (current plus 3 upcoming months worth) of opportunities every month (except for July), posted on the 1st business day of the month.  The newsletter announcements are arranged alphabetically by sponsoring agency and  include about 20 - 25 detailed announcements. In addition, links to several hundred more are included and arranged by subject category and then deadline date. Only announcements for which colleges and universities are determined to be eligible are included.  TGA Plus does not include announcements for students - just for doctoral candidates, postdocs and faculty.  Federal as well as nonfederal announcements are included, among them, the National Science Foundation (NSF).  However, announcements from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) are not included.  Questions?  Call the Office of Sponsored Programs and ask for the Funding Information Administrator.

Mentored Career Development Awards: Change in NIH policy concerning concurrent support from Career Development Award and a research grant.

With this notice, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) modifies its policy on mentored career development awards (K Awards) to allow award recipients to hold concurrent support from their career award and a competing research grant when recognized as a Principal Investigator or subproject Director. Thus mentored career award recipients in the last two years of their support period will be permitted to reduce the level of effort required for the career award and replace that effort with an NIH research grant or subproject provided they remain in a mentored situation. This policy will permit those candidates who are ready to apply for and receive NIH research support to continue to benefit from the period of protected time offered by the career development award.

This change in policy applies to the following mentored career award mechanisms: K01, K07 (developmental) K08, K22,  K23, and K25, as well as the individuals mentored through institutional K12 awards. Certain rules apply to this change. Please see the NIH notice for more information at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-04-007.html

NEW NIH SALARY CAP

Effective January 1, 2008 NIH has raised the salary cap to $191,300. Funds from a NIH award cannot be used to pay a base salary greater than the cap.

Grantees may rebudget funds to cover salaries up to this cap; however, additional funds will not be awarded by NIH to make up any shortages.
