Advice for New Users
The Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) is the University's central administrative unit responsible for processing and monitoring applications for, and awards of, external funding, and overseeing the institutional review and compliance of all activities involving human subjects, vertebrate animals, and recombinant DNA and provides information, advice and assistance in these critical areas.
OSP is a service office dedicated to providing faculty and professional staff with information, advice, and assistance in the seeking of extramural funds and in awarded grant and contract management.
OSP is also responsible for assuring that all parties involved with extramural funding are aware of, and in compliance with, sponsor and University regulations and administrative requirements.
Funding Information
The OSP Library
Resources include directories and proposal writing guides. The library also
has the funding priorities, proposal guidelines, and application forms for a
number of agencies.
Funding Searches
OSP provides quick access to thousands of funding sources from all sectors
through electronic national databases. In addition to specialized searches OSP
offers training sessions to teach faculty and staff how to access electronic
information from their computers.
SMARTS/GENIUS
Delivers funding opportunity information daily to faculty email accounts.
Funding Information Newsletter
OSP offers a campus-wide subscription to The GrantAdvisor Plus, a monthly
online newsletter which provides funding information specific to U.S.
institutions of higher education and their faculty.
Intramural Funding
Sponsored Programs can provide information on intramural funding which may
be available through individual Dean's offices or the Graduate College.
Workshops
Seminars and workshops on sources of funding, proposal preparation, and post
award grant administration are offered.
Sponsored Programs Administration
Individual Assistance with Applications
OSP will interpret and explain agency policy and administrative
requirements, assist with the development of proposal budgets, complete
application certifications and assurances, and clarify University requirements
and approvals. Sponsored Programs also negotiates the terms of research
contracts and material transfer agreements and obtains institutional signature
on these documents.
We will also assist in information gathering and problem solving with other campus offices such as General Counsel, Grant and Contract Accounting, Personnel, Purchasing, Risk Management, and Technology Transfer.
Review Committees
The University is committed to the protection of human subjects, the humane
care and use of vertebrate animals, and safe and responsible use of recombinant
DNA technology. The committees charged with reviewing research protocols for
these considerations are: Institutional Review boards (IRBs): the Committee on
Human Research in the Medical Sciences (CHRMS) and the Committee on Human
Research in the Behavioral Sciences (CHRBS); the Institutional Animal Care and Use
Committee (IACUC); and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). OSP
administers the activities of these committees; OSP/IRB staff members are
available to answer questions and offer guidance in preparing material for
committee review.
Compliance
Most federal, state, and private funding agencies apply specific regulations
to their awards. Sponsored Programs is responsible for ensuring the University's compliance with these regulations. Information on, and
interpretation of, specific regulations and their implications for sponsored
projects can be obtained from OSP.
Intellectual Property
OSP can provide information on the University's policy concerning patents,
licenses, and copyright as well as on the intellectual property policies of the
federal government and numerous other funding agencies.
Data Management
Data management staff distribute periodic reports on proposals submitted and
awards received, and can provide customized reports as requested.
