Faculty

The Center for Teaching and Learning 

CTL, in collaboration with the Office of the Provost, offers the following award and grant opportunities to faculty: 1) The Kroepsch-Maurice Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes faculty in each of the academic ranks who have demonstrated excellence in classroom teaching, ability to motivate and challenge students, and the capacity to engage students in the pursuit of knowledge and understanding;  2) Instructional Incentive Grants are awarded for innovations in any aspect of teaching, learning and/or assessment; and 3) Lastly faculty with Grant-funded Research projects dealing with teaching are invited to collaborate with CTL.  CTL is particularly interested in teaching with technology and has expertise in developing online courses, web applications and usability assessment.

The Office of Community-University Partnerships and Service-Learning (CUPS) 

CUPS was created in September of 2003 to support active, collaborative UVM-Community partnerships, high quality service-learning, and community-based scholarship and offers the following support for those who are actively implementing service-learning: 1) Faculty Implementation Grants provide awards of up to $1,000 for creating new service-learning classes, adding service-learning to an existing class, creating student leadership opportunities in service-learning; 2) The Service-Learning Teaching Assistant Program trains students in service-learning pedagogy and places them as teaching assistants in service-learning courses at no cost to the faculty or department; 3) Funds for Faculty/Staff/Student Attendance at Conferences, Trainings, and Workshops; and 4) Off-Cycle supplemental funding (usually limited to $200) for a service learning course or project which does not fall into the timeline for the above Faculty Implementation Grants.

Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies

The Research Opportunities Grants Program has recently been launched to support the research, scholarship, and creative activities of the faculty at UVM. The program includes the following 5 mechanisms for support: 1) career enhancement in traditionally underfunded disciplines, 2) innovative pilot research projects, 3) preliminary interdisciplinary research projects, 4) the development of major multi-investigator and multi-unit proposals, and 5) critical research equipment for multiple users. College of Arts and Sciences

Faculty Research Support Awards Program including the Joan Smith Faculty Research Support Award

CAS Faculty Research Support Awards for FY 2008-2009 will:  support Assistant Professors and new Associate Professors in furthering their research; support senior Associate Professors and Professors in furthering their research; give preference to Assistant Professors and new Associate Professors; provide funding during the initial phase of a new research project; provide funding for transition projects of faculty who are expanding their areas of research; and seed an expansion of extramural funding in the college. The maximum award is $15,000; up to five awards will be granted.  See website for full description and eligibility requirements. One Faculty Research Award will be made that must fulfill an additional criterion: the research must address, illuminate or seek to ameliorate a pressing issue of social injustice. Lattie Coor Awards for Faculty Development and International Travel
Lattie Coor Endowment provides support for development and international travel to faculty members in the Humanities as well as in other academic departments and programs that deal with the historical and cultural contexts and/or philosophical foundations of their fields of study.  The Development Awards support research, scholarly or artistic activities in the amount of up to$2,500.  The International Travel Awards provide up to $1,000 to help with travel costs for faculty who are giving humanities-oriented papers at professional meetings outside the U.S.

College of Medicine

Bridge Support Program (BSP)
These funds are set aside for interim research support of faculty who, for one reason or another, find themselves temporarily without extramural funding for research. Funding is available to faculty members with at least 3 years continuous previous support through either individual grants or through components of multi-investigator grants. Applications will be accepted from all full-time/salaried faculty members (0.75 FTE or greater). Applications may now request up to $50,000.

Clinical Research Feasibility Funds (CReFF)
The CReFF program awards grants to support well-conceived pilot studies designed to lead to extramural funding. These awards are intended to be used to supplement the use of normal General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) facilities and services by allowing purchases in categories normally not allowable to regular GCRC users (e.g. small equipment, technical help, subject compensation).  CReFF award Principal Investigators must hold a full-time faculty appointment or full-time or part-time clinical appointment at the University of Vermont or at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Applications are accepted from full-time faculty appointed elsewhere than to the College of Medicine when the proposal clearly involves clinical or patient-oriented research.

Internal  Grant Program (IGP)
IGP monies are intended to support research studies by College of Medicine faculty aimed specifically at collecting preliminary data for extramural grant applications. This program is not designed to fund pilot studies. Instead, it is meant to supplement the investigators current research program to strengthen upcoming grant submissions. All full-time/salaried College of Medicine faculty members (0.75 FTE or greater) are eligible to request research support from the IGP funds. Applications may now request up to $25,000.

Office of International Education

International Incentive Grants
University of Vermont International Educational Incentive Grants are intended to encourage and support internationalization of the campus by UVM faculty. Funding for these grants is provided by the Provost's Office via the International Initiatives Committee (formerly the Global Outreach Committee). Examples of previously funded projects are on the IIC website.  Funding for specific proposals will range from $300 to $1,500, although proposals for larger amounts will be considered on a case by case basis.

Women's Center Grant Program
The Women's Center Grant Program provides funding for meritorious projects that serve to advance the following goals of the Women's Center: 1) To promote educational programs that foster gender equity and positive social change; 2) To support research and curricula that incorporate the multiple and intersecting identities of women, their cultural knowledge and heritage; 3) To integrate education, research, community outreach and administrative programs that benefit women identified communities; and 4) To promote the welfare and status of women students, staff and faculty of the University of Vermont with respect to spiritual, social, professional and academic well being.

The Honors College will coordinate efforts to support all UVM students and recent graduates who want to apply for certain nationally competitive fellowships and scholarships.  These scholarships may be distinguished by geographic or disciplinary focus, or by applicant characteristics. Some of these scholarships are for seniors and recent graduates; others are for sophomores and juniors. HELiX (Hughes Endeavor For Life Science Excellence) Programs
These undergraduate programs are funded by the University and offer support for research in many areas of science. Visit the HELiX Office to view and select from a list of approximately 100 UVM scientists and their research areas.  A majority of the faculty listed, appear to be in the Life/Medical/Physical Sciences; however there are several other areas represented including Psychology and Anthropology.  After a match is found, the student can sign up for an undergraduate research course and submit a project proposal to the sponsoring department. It is recommended that you visit the HELiX Office in advance of the semester for which you seek credit.   Mini-grants, offered in the fall and spring semesters (for up to $500) are for research expenses and supplies for undergraduate students signed up for research credit.  Deadlines are early on, in the semester for which funding is desired (fall or spring).  Summer Internships provide a summer salary ($3500) and supply funding ($1500) on a competitive basis for 10 students each year. Deadline for Summer Internships is in the preceding Spring.

Undergraduate Research Endeavors Competitive Awards (URECA!)
Funded by the Provost's office, the URECA! program  provides prestigious, competitive awards to outstanding undergraduates who wish to pursue a specific research project under the mentorship of a faculty member. All full-time UVM undergraduates are eligible and any UVM faculty member may act as a student's mentor. Awards will not be made for students engaged in research for which they will receive academic credit - each project must go beyond course work or assignments (although it may extend or build upon credit-bearing work).

College of Agriculture and Life Sciences

Undergraduate Scholarships
Please note that the following CALS scholarships are for undergraduate studies and for students currently enrolled in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.  Scholarship applications are available in CALS department offices or in the CALS Dean's Ofiice at 106 Morrill Hall.  Individual scholarship award amounts are generally between $2,000 and $3,500.

  • Richard D. Alpin Scholarship Fund: Preference for but not limited to students enroled in dairy marketing, diary technology or farm business management.
  • Edith T. and Charles Dana Bennett Foundation Scholarship: Students must exhibit leadership qualities and be active in non-athletic campus activities.
  • Richard H. Holzer Memorial Scholarship:  Available to students, preferably Vermonters who demonstrate financial need as defined by UVM's Financial Aid Office, exhibit leadership qualities and are active on campus.
  • Fund for Undergraduate Scholarship Excellence (FUSE): Provides monetary assistance to support undergraduate scholastic opportunities outside the classroom. Applicants must be currently active students enrolled in a CALS major with at least one full semester in the College. The project/experience must be relevant to the student's major course of study and/or career goals. The experience must be in addition to experiences related to class requirements. The amount of funding requested must have at least a 50% department or program match. The application must state how this experience will benefit peers and or the community as well as the applicant.

College of Arts & Science

APLE (Academic Programs for Learning and Engagement) Program
APLE is funded by the College of Arts and Sciences and Individual Departments of the College. It provides undergraduate students with opportunities to do research with faculty members, and to get hands-on experience through internships.  Students may apply under either of two categories.  APLE Summer Stipends provide a summer salary of $3000 for students doing research with faculty members and are available for two students each year.  The application deadline for Summer Stipends is March 1 each year.
APLE Awards provide up to $500 in support for expenses involved in credit-bearing undergraduate research and creative activities and are available for twenty-four students each year for such activities as travel to research libraries or other sites to gather data and expenses for supplies.  Deadlines for APLE Awards are October 30 and February 1 each year.

Ronald Suiter Prize
Each year the Ronald Suiter Prizes will provide at least $1,000 to six students in the College of Arts and Sciences at UVM to help defray costs of attending conferences, seminars, workshops, and etc. by undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences.

English Department

Corse Fellowship
The Corse Fellowship is awarded annually. Any student who has majored in English or a foreign language is eligible to apply, with the further restriction that the student must use the money for graduate study to prepare for a career in college teaching or in journalism. The fellowship currently pays each recipient up to $3,000.
