Animal Orders

The Office of Animal Care Management (OACM) places animal orders with approved animal vendors on a weekly basis. We coordinate counteroffers and provide order confirmations as well as negotiating with the vendors on the investigators’ behalf if there are problems with animal shipments. As of March 2009, Animal Care Management has approved 5 commercial vendors for rodents. These are:

Animal orders must be received no later than noon on Wednesday in order to assure delivery of the animals the following week. In the event that an order is submitted late, a $30 late fee will be applied and OACM will not assure delivery the following week. Rodents sourced from non-approved vendors or other academic institutions are subject to a 60 day quarantine period and must test negative for exclusionary diseases. See Import/Export page for description and details on ordering from non-approved vendors or other academic institutions.

The vendors confirm animal availability and communicate counter-offers to OACM. Our office may need to communicate with laboratories about the suitability of counter-offers. For this reason, providing contact information for a responsible person in the lab who is available to answer questions is critical. Once the order is finalized OACM sends a confirmation for your review. The follow-up process of communicating with the vendors and confirming orders with labs usually takes until noon on Friday. Cage cards and a delivery report are sent to the Animal Facility on Friday afternoon so that animal care staff can be prepared for the animal shipment.

Click on the Animal Order Request Link for an order form.  Email submissions of orders to oacm@uvm.edu are preferred. If email submission is not possible, print the form and FAX to 656-8315. COMPLETE ALL PORTIONS OF THE ORDER FORM. Labs are responsible for the accuracy of their orders. The vendor websites can be used to research health specifications, strain codes, refund policies and other important questions related to the animal order. Some vendors periodically offer specials on commonly-used strains, so you may find it worthwhile to become familiar with your vendor’s web-marketing.

OACM is your point of contact if there are problems with the animals that are received. OACM facilitates requests for refunds, but refunds are at the vendor’s discretion. Each vendor has different refund or animal replacement rules but a general rule of thumb is that they need to be contacted about animal quality problems within three days of animal receipt.
