Faculty Recital: Sarah Cullins, voice

Time: 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: UVM Music Building Recital Hall
Description: Husband and wife team soprano Sarah Cullins, a Burlington-native, and Colombian guitarist Daniel Gaviria recently formed 8 Cuerdas, a duo dedicated primarily to music of the Americas, bringing together their love for the traditional and contemporary expressions of the entire continent. Although the majority of their repertoire is most frequently performed in a classical setting, Sarah and Daniel analyze the musical influences of each piece, such as an Argentinean milonga or a Spanish Zarzuela, to mold their own interpretations.

In this concert, they will bring audiences on a southerly tour of Latinamerica, starting with Puerto Rico and Cuba, winding down to Colombia and Venezuela, touching on Brazil and ending in Argentina and then will take a leap across the ocean to end with works from Spain.

Free and open to the public.

Vermont Wind Ensemble Concert

Time: 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Location: UVM Music Building Recital Hall
Description: The Vermont Wind Ensemble takes the audience on a musical adventure to exotic places with a program entitled "Myths and Legends". The concert opens with Sousa's tribute to the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine (now referred to as the Shriners), with his "Nobles of the Mystic Shrine". Sousa combines this fraternal organization's sense of fun and fellowship with mystical and Turkish elements in one of his most unusual and colorful marches. Next is a romp through the Old West with John Williams' Overture to "The Cowboys", followed by Alfred Reed's wonderfully evocative "A Northern Legend", which takes us to the calm and cool northern woods of the the United States. The concert closes with Johann de Meij's epic Symphony No. 1, "The Lord of the Rings". Based on characters and places from Tolkien's novel, this original work for symphonic band visits the mythical world of Gandalf, Lothlorien, Gollum, the mines of Moria, and the Hobbits.

Free and open to the public.
