Jazz Studies Concentration
UVM's Jazz Studies Program's guiding principle matches the one that has guided jazz musicians from the very beginning: the quest for personal sound and style. Become a part of UVM's Jazz Studies and experience the excitement and energy of a dynamic and growing jazz program.
World-class faculty guide you through a challenging and rewarding jazz curriculum
Students learn fundamentals through classroom and individual study with our world-class faculty. Beginning with courses in traditional "classical" theory, our students progress into jazz-oriented courses such as Theory and Practice of Jazz Improvisation I, Jazz History, and Introduction to World Music Cultures. Upper level courses include Jazz Composition and Arranging and Advanced Improvisational Techniques. View music courses.
All Jazz Studies majors learn basic jazz piano in our Piano Lab. Students may also elect to receive training in the latest music software and recording techniques in our state-of-the-art Music Technology Lab. Read more about our facilities.
Opportunities to perform and learn from the masters
Students get the opportunity to perform in a wide range of ensembles from big band and Latin jazz to post-bop and beyond. Learn more about our jazz ensembles.

Our location in Burlington, Vermont offers a vibrant live music scene where students have ample opportunity to experiment musically and to hone their skills infront of appreciative audiences. At cafés, clubs and restaurants such as the world-renowned Nectar's, Radio Bean, Club Metronome, Red Square, Higher Ground Music, Parima Acoustic Lounge, students discover their distinctive musical voices.
