Email: Alan.Parshley@uvm.eduAlan Parshley has performed throughout New England over the past twenty five years as a member of the horn sections of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra among others. With the Vermont Symphony Brass Trio, he introduces thousands of Vermont school children to brass instruments annually. He has performed as soloist with orchestras and wind ensembles in the United States and Europe.
His performances have been heard on Public radio in Wisconsin, Vermont, and New York, on numerous recordings for the Albany, Decca, and Crystal labels with the Albany Symphony, the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble, and the University of Wisconsin Horn Ensemble. A founding member of the Pitten International Music Festival, he has traveled to Austria since 1992 to teach, perform, and serve as Associate Director of the festival. In Vermont, he is founder and director of the Green Mountain Horn Club, and in 2006 hosted the Northeast Regional Horn Society Workshop, which featured artists from throughout North America. A member of the faculty at the University of Vermont since 1983, he teaches studio horn, music theory, brass pedagogy, beginning piano, and frequently serves as a pianist and accompanist for student performances.
Memorable performances: His 1995 performance with the alternative rock group “Phish” has recently been released on compact disc. Of this concert, Dean Burdick, who chronicles the history of Phish, noted that the performance was “richly enhanced by Alan Parshley on the French Horn”.
Groups accompanied: Vermont Symphony Orchestra and the Albany Symphony Orchestra, as well as with the Vermont Brass Quintet. With the Vermont Symphony Brass Trio. He also performed for several seasons as principal horn of the Berkshire Symphony Orchestra in western Massachusetts. Prior to moving to Vermont he performed with the Kalamazoo Symphony, and completed two extensive tours with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra.
