She has displayed her talent in a variety of venues and genres – classical, jazz, gospel and musical theater. Evelyn has worked with many of the state’s promising young voices.
Raised in Oklahoma, Evelyn Kwanza earned a bachelor of music in voice performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. She received a master’s in vocal pedagogy from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts.
In the summer of 2012, she appeared as soloist for Kunst und Kulturkreis Pitten Music Festival in Pitten, Austria. In the Fall of 2011 she was cast as “Motormouth Maybelle” in Lyric Theater’s production of Hairspray. Other performances include performances of Vivaldi’s Gloria with the Burlington Chamber Orchestra and St. Albans High School and Professional Orchestra. She has also been a soloist for Burlington Choral Society with performances of Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Haydn’s Theresienmesse and more.
Evelyn teaches voice and lectures at the University of Vermont and has a music studio is Essex, where she teaches private voice and piano lessons. At New Alpha Missionary Baptist Church in Burlington, she directs the children’s choir and is the assistant music director of the popular GospelFest held annually at the Flynn Theater. She also is director of the youth choirs at First Congregational Church in Burlington.
Memorable performances: Recent solo performances include the Messiah with the St. Albans High School and Community Chorus, "American Mass" by Ron Keath with South Burlington and South County Community Choruses, "GospelFest 2007", and Vergennes’ Opera House’s "Broadway Direct". In June 2007, Evelyn enjoyed being a member of the 2007 Green Mountain Opera Festival Chorus which performed Puccini’s "Madame Butterfly".
