A strong professional music foundation for career musicians
The Bachelor or Music program, with concentration in performance, is a professional music degree designed for talented students who wish to pursue a career in music as performers. To earn the degree, students must demonstrate technical competence via performances as soloists and in ensembles, as well as a broad knowledge of musical styles and literature. Admission is through audition at the end of the freshman year.
What can I do with a B.Mus. degree?
A student who chooses the B.Mus. degree program is typically preparing to become a career musician whether a performer in an orchestra, band, chamber ensemble, jazz group, as a soloist, or perhaps as a composer or music theorist. Students choose the B.Mus. because it allows them to concentrate on achieving these goals through concentrated hands-on work with their craft.
B.Mus. degree recipients may combine several components of their passion for performing when assembling their career - for example, playing in a symphony and teaching at a local university. Learn about careers in music.
What is the difference between a B.Mus. degree and a B.A. degree in music?
A Bachelor of Music is a professional, not liberal arts, degree that requires more credit hours in music. B.Mus. students do not have a minor, but must complete the same general distribution requirements of the B. A. The Bachelor of Arts is a liberal arts degree in which students pick a major (music) and a minor (for example, biology, math, English), allowing them to explore a variety of academic interests. Many of our students choose to double major in music and another subject, in which case a minor is not needed.
Curriculum
The B.Mus. curriculum teaches the performance side of music while also teaching the practical and academic skills to be a successful professional musician. In addition to the degree requirements for the B.A. with a concentration in performance, students must complete an additional 40 hours.
