Philosophy 218: Homework #3
Please use a
printer to print your assignment, using (preferably) 1 inch margins, 12 point
font, and double spacing. Try to put
your answers in everyday English, using a minimum of technical expressions or,
at least, explaining any that you use; use your own words as much as possible
rather than quotes. Write the last four
digits of your student ID number but not
your name on the homework. Rough
page length limits are in parentheses (‘3/4’ means three-fourths of a page).
- In “The Self and the Future,”
Chisholm calls into question the psychological criterion of personal
identity. What reasons does he present that suggest the psychological
criterion is wrong? (3/4)
- Summarize Wiggins’ argument
involving the pruning of the tree (but not the argument in which the tree
is chopped down) that concludes that two things can occupy exactly the
same volume at exactly the same time. (1)
- Summarize Burke's solution to the
Problem of Material Constitution (I’m talking about his view, not his argument). Briefly
assess the strengths and weaknesses of this view. (1-1/4)
- Summarize Heller’s argument. (3/4)
