Smart talks about an alternative way of talking. What is the benefit of this way of talking?

What is the whole purpose of this way of talking? That is, why does Smart introduce it? What is the thesis he is defending and what is the thesis he is arguing against?

Smart says that when he says that the future exists, this doesn’t entail any sort of fatalism. Why not? If my great granddaughter exists, doesn’t that dictate that my kids must have kids and they, in turn, must also?
