Smart’s “Extreme and Restricted Utilitarianism”

Try to get as clear as possible about what extreme utilitarianism and restricted utilitarianism are.  These are also called act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism, respectively (why?).

If someone believes that extreme utilitarianism is the correct view about which acts are right and which are wrong, why would they possibly believe that the right thing to do is not to tell others that it is the correct view?

Can you think of any reason to prefer restricted utilitarianism?

What reason(s) does Smart give for thinking that restricted utilitarianism is wrong?

Terminology: ‘optimific’ means that which produces the best consequences.
