Kane’s “Introduction” to Free Will

For pages 1-12:

Kane lays out a lot of material on free will in fairly short order.  Here are some things to concentrate on:

What is determinism (and it’s opposite, indeterminism)?

What is compatibilism (and it’s opposite, incompatibilism)?

What is the connection between free will and moral responsibility?

If we think that the world is deterministic, why is there a puzzle about free will?  If we think that we have good evidence that the world is not deterministic, it seems that we no longer have a puzzle.  But in fact we do.  Why?  In other words, what’s the puzzle about free will if we assume that the universe is indeterministic?

For pages 12-24:

Free will seems to involve ‘alternative possibilities’.  What does this mean?  Many deny that free will does require alternative possibilities.  Why?

What is libertarianism?

What is hard determinism?

What is soft determinism?
