Campbell’s “Has
the Self Free Will?”
First, make sure it’s clear which position Campbell
is endorsing. Does he think we do or we
don’t have free will? Does he think the
universe is deterministic or indeterministic?
Does he think determinism is compatible with free will or not?
Campbell
says many things about free will. Try to
separate out which are his reasons. He is arguing for free will (okay, this
answers one of the previous questions), but which things that he talks about
out are supposed to be evidence that will convince us that we really do have
free will? In other words, what is Campbell’s
argument?
Can you think of any way of accounting for that
evidence other than by conceding that we have free will?
