Elliott continues to list things.. like everyone at the table, everyone who is home - I can say "elliott, who is home?" and he'll say "elliott and... mama... and cat... and bunny... and dada..." and so on. If we ask him "who is in your family?, he'll list mama, dada, Elliott. He'll list everything he sees on a page in a book too. He has most of the books with fire in them memorized - so he'll point to a Sandra Boynton book about counting or Curious George's alphabet book and say "fire fire!". Took us a while to catch onto that one.

He's very interested in tools. We read the "making a bird house" book dozens of times a day. We go downstairs and look at the saws and sandpaper frequently. A few days ago, he ran around chanting "electric saw!" over and over again (yekdric daw!). He seems to really enjoy leaning two-word combinations, like sand paper, green jeans (his favorite green denim overalls), etc. He also is starting to learn the definition of "sandwich". He seems to have an unquenchable thirst for words and ideas. He ran around chanting "weird day" after overhearing a conversationwe were having. We have to be careful what sort of explanation we give him, because he will play it back to us forever. He's really into humpty dumpty right now, and will point out any humpty dumpty in a book. He makes us go through the whole story, and he suggests using tape, or glue, to fix humpty, and we talk about how humpty wasn't wearing a helmet or being careful. A few times things have broken permanently, and I've said, "broken like humpty dumpty" and he seems to know that I won't be able to fix it.

He has discovered that if he takes the cushion off the sofa, he can jump on it, and then leap off onto the cushion. He also sings frequently. He can count to six, but he says "one, two, boar, fier, sick" (no sign of the number three). He can sing the alphabet song accurately, but other than starting with "a" and ending with "me", the rest is gibberish. You can tell he thinks he's mimicking us, which is just so cute.

He woke up the other day with the words "ee ee ee ee ohhhh" (old macdonald). I tend to get silly songs stuck in my head, and by the end of the day, he'll pick up on them.. so now he can sort of sing "hot cross buns" (we made hot cross buns this weekend - yummy!), and skip to my lou. He seems to be very tuned in to sounds. He can hear a siren in the background (quite faint) and never misses an airplane, saw or other motor noise. We just need to pay attention to what he's saying, because many times we aren't even hearing what he is hearing (like a faint siren - it's just background noise). Parts of speech he's working on.. he has "son" and "daughter" figured out, and he's working on "other" and "another". He is great with prepositions (over, under, behind, etc), and is now trying to figure out pronouns. Today at dinner, he sat there saying, "he?" over and over. We tried using "he" in sentences (and "she"), like "I love Dada, HE's my friend" etc., but Elliott still looked a little uncertain.

He's still nursing frequently, and this week he reached a new level of cuteness. When he wants the other side, he asks for "one two" (because there are two of them). Also, for the first time this week, he said, "hello nummy!" addressing my breast (which he calls nummy). He is starting to call it "milk" too now, which is kind of neat. He knows cow's milk is not like mama's milk - and vastly prefers the latter.

Elliott's favorite activity is "getchoo" - hide and seek. Dad and Elliott play it every evening.. we're still working on getting him to count to three, but he really enjoys hiding. He is getting good too. He figured out how to hide behind the curtains (he still thinks hiding his head means really "hiding"), hiding in the closet, and hiding under a pillow. He also loves to hide in his fire truck tent.

Elliott's a challenge to get to sleep at night. We have a routine, and it ends with me lying down and nursing him. Often, he'll drink and settle down until he's almost asleep, then pop off and start talking about whatever's on his mind. It's usually ball, or airplane, or a person we saw that day.. if he hears anything downstairs, he remarks on it. Once, Dad was making tea, and shut the microwave door. I thought Elliott was asleep, but he sat right up in bed and said, "boom?!" over and over until I explained that it was the microwave door, and Dad was making tea. He repeated those words for a while and, satisfied, went back to nursing. You can't pull anything over on him.

He's also developed an instantaneous Baltimore-ish accent, which I can't explain. Instead of saying "move" he says "mewve". He does this all the time, and yet I can't think of any more words.. sigh!
