Scholarships & Travel Awards

These sites represent ongoing opportunities for academic scholarships and travel awards. Traditional deadlines are listed but check each site individually to verify.

  • College Board - Scholarship search site which maintains a database of over 2,300 funding sources that distributed more than $3 billion in awards last year.
  • Fast WEB - Search program with more than 180,000 available scholarships in its database.
  • Goldwater Scholarship - Annual competition for future scientists, mathematicians and engineers. The award of $7,500 a year is intended to assist college seniors or graduate students cover eligible expenses for tuition, fees, books, and room and board. Nominations are required from the college and for UVM applicants, the process is administered by the Honors College. The deadline traditionally is mid December for the following academic year.
  • Hispanic Scholarship Fund - HSF has awarded more than 75,000 scholarships totalling over $170 million in its 30-year history of supporting higher education goals for Hispanic college students. Varying programs and deadlines.
  • Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship - The IGERT program seeks undergraduate students interested in building the technical, professional and personal skills needed to address the global questions of the future. The mission of the IGERT National Recruitment Program is to increase the participation of underrepresented groups, including women and minorities, in doctoral programs in the engineering, science and mathematics fields. Funded by the National Science Foundation, IGERT programs provide participants with the edge needed to become leaders in their chosen fields.   • MALDEF (The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund) - Approximately 100 individual scholarship opportunities with varying requirements and deadlines. Many are general or based upon financial need; others are specific to gender, career goals, region of the country or field of study.
  • McNair Scholars Only! - A site tailor-made for McNair scholars!  Lists universities offering incentives for applying McNair Scholars, including application fee waivers, assistantships and fellowships.
  • National Aeronatics and Space Administration (NASA) - Undergraduate research opportunities throughout the country for college juniors and seniors who are U.S. citizens, majoring in the sciences, engineering, computer science or math, and hold a 3.0 minimum GPA. The deadline traditionally is January 31 every year.
  • National Science Foundation Summer REU Program - The NSF funds a number of summer research opportunities for undergraduates through its Sites program, which consists of a group of ten undergraduates who work in research programs of host institutions. Each student is associated with a specific research project and works closely with faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduates supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location. Students search for sites by geographic location, research subject areas or keywords. Students contact the individual sites for information and application materials. There are multiple opportunities with varying deadlines.
  • Primero Hispanic Heritage Scholarship - Inspired by the efforts and dedication of the many Hispanic families who have helped their children become the first to attend college, Sears Holdings Corporation has created the PRIMERO Hispanic Heritage Scholarship. The scholarship awards up to $10,000 toward college costs for those who are first in their family.
  • Science, Mathematics And Research for Transformation (SMART) - A Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The program aims to increase the number of civilian scientists and engineers working at DoD laboratories. Applications are considered for undergraduate and graduate students who: are U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or more, and is enrolled full time in a STEM discipline at an ABET-accredited school. The scholarship covers all tuition and fees. The traditional deadline is early to mid-December each year.
  • Student Scholarship Search - Database of over 8,000 programs with a distribution level of over 150,000 awards for undergraduate and postgraduate students worth a total of more than $35 million. Site includes scholarships based upon merit, grants based upon need, and student loan forgiveness programs for those who have graduated from college and need alternatives for repayment.
  • Suiter Travel Award - Each year the Ronald Suiter Prize provides up to $1,000 each to six or more students in the UVM College of Arts and Sciences. Awards are based upon merit and decisions are made by a faculty committee. Recipients must be full-time matriculated undergraduate or graduate students in CAS. Funds must be used to attend a meeting, conference, or symposium to allow the student to present scholarly work or to advance scholarly abilities. Priority is given to applicants who attend with a UVM faculty mentor in CAS. The application deadlines are October 30 for Fall and February 1 for Spring. Preference is given to graduate students in the fall and undergraduates in the spring. If you apply off-cycle, state in your application why it is necessary to do so.
  • Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) - Administered by the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), an academic consortium of the Big Ten Schools plus the University of Chicago, SROP features undergraduate research opportunities for college sophomores, juniors and seniors of all majors who are interested in careers on college campuses as teaching faculty or researchers. Applicants must be from groups underrepresented in their fields, and must be US citizens or permanent residents. Deadlines range from January and February of each year for the following summer.
  • Supercollege.com - Each year scholarships are awarded to outstanding college students. Apply online. The deadline traditionally is July 31 every year.
  • Truman Scholarship provides up to $30,000 in funding to students pursuing graduate degrees in public service fields. Students must be college juniors at the time of selection. The Foundation also provides assistance with career counseling, internship placement, graduate school admissions, and professional development. Students accepted as Scholars are invited to participate in a number of programs: Truman Scholar Leadership Week, The Summer Institute, The Truman Fellows Program, and the Public Service Law Conference. Please visit the website for an overview of the programs the Foundation currently offers. The application deadline traditionally is early February each year.
  • Udall Scholarship awards 80 scholarships of up to $5000 each, plus 50 honorable mentions of $350 each to sophomore and junior level college students committed to careers related to the environment, tribal public policy, or Native American health care. Nominations are required from the college and for UVM applicants, the process is administered by the Honors College. The deadline traditionally is mid February for the following academic year.
