Research Opps at UVM for undergrads

Research Funding Opportunities at UVM for Undergraduates

1. APLE (Academic Programs for Learning & Engagement) - APLE provides students in the College of Arts and Sciences with opportunities to do research with faculty members, and to get hands-on experience in internships. Science students work in research laboratories both in Arts and Sciences and in the Medical School. Other students become involved in the local community through internships and service learning projects, and still others follow their interests in the United States and abroad. Funding is available on a competitive basis for research and creative projects. Click here for more information.

  • APLE Summer Awards provide a salary of $3,000 for students doing research with faculty members. Two awards are available each year and the application deadline is March 1.
  • APLE Academic Year Awards provide up to $500 in support expenses involved in credit-bearing undergraduate research and creative activities. Each year, there are 24 awards available to support such activities as travel to research libraries or other sites to gather data, expenses for supplies and so forth. The application deadlines are October 30 and February 15 of each year.

2. HELiX (Hughes Endeavor for Life Science Excellence) – This program supports undergraduates in the sciences at the University of Vermont. HELiX awards funds to students from all colleges majoring in the sciences. HELiX strives to encourage students to stay in science and consider science careers by involving them in research projects and informing them about and exposing them to many opportunities. Students in the sciences are assisted in identifying mentors and research projects in laboratories in the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Agriculture and Life Science, the College of Medicine, the College of Engineering, the School of Natural resources, and the School of Allied Health. Click here for more information about HELiX funding opportunities.

  • Mini grants - HELiX provides support on a competitive basis to students doing research at UVM during the fall and spring semesters. Up to $500 for research expenses and supplies is available per student. The application deadline is late September for a Fall mini-grant and early February for a Spring mini-grant.
  • Summer Internships - Each Spring undergraduates apply for the summer program which consists of a summer salary ($3,500) and supply funding ($1,500). Funds are awarded on a competitive basis to 10 students each year. Presenting their research at a Fall Symposium provides participants with the opportunity to create a professional display of their work and to come together as a group to see what their peers are doing in research.

3. McNair Scholars Program Summer Research Internship - This competitive summer opportunity is open to ten students a year who are active participants in the McNair Scholars Program. The research internship runs 8 to 10 weeks in length and includes a generous minimum stipend of $2,800, matching with a faculty member conducting research, room and board on campus, a free laptop computer and a technology training seminar. For information on program eligibility, click here.

4. Ronald Suiter Award – This award is open to undergraduate and graduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences at UVM to defray costs of attending conferences, seminars, workshops, etc. The Suiter Award provides up to six $300 stipends each year, with an additional $150 from the College of Arts and Sciences added to each award. The major department of the student will be asked to match between $50 and $150, thus providing each student with between $500 and $600 in support. Awards are based upon merit and the decisions made by a faculty committee. For graduate students, the application deadline is October 1. For undergraduate students, the application deadline is March 1. Click here for an application and guidelines.

5. URECA (Undergraduate Research Endeavors Competitive Awards) - This program provides funds to outstanding undergraduates from all colleges and majors who wish to pursue a specific research project under the mentorship of a f aculty member. Undergraduates have the opportunity and resources to pursue independent research as well as work closely with active faculty members who are leading scholars in their fields. The competition is structured to mirror both the application process and the execution of a program that would typically be funded by an external granting agency: students are required to submit a proposal describing a specific research project to be completed under the direction of a faculty mentor, proposals are evaluated by panels of UVM experts, and the top ranked proposals are selected for funding. Awardees carry out the research, either during a semester or a summer, and submit a final report detailing the outcomes. In many instances, results may be suitable for presentation at regional or national conferences and/or publication (funds may be requested to support such culminations). Finally, awardees are honored at a special event each year, and their efforts publicized by the University. Each year, 25 URECA awards are granted and the application deadline is mid-October. For each funded proposal, the student receives a $1,000 scholarship and operating funds not to exceed $3,000. Click here for more information about URECA.
