Requirements for McNair Scholars

The McNair Scholars Program is committed to helping UVM undergraduates prepare for graduate school and ultimately, to earn a doctorate.  To promote this success, participation is required in certain activities appropriate to all future graduate students.  Additional, optional services are also available and highly recommended.

Individual Education Action Plan (IEAP)

Required:

  • Mandatory meeting once a semester with the Program Coordinator to assess academic progress
  • Development of an action plan that identifies barriers to educational advancement and prescribes courses of action to address those barriers
  • Tutor Assignments if grades fall below minimum standards

Optional:

  • Individual work on critical writing, thinking and reading skills
  • Audit or enrollment in an undergraduate course in an identified need area
  • Career counseling
  • Personality/career testing
  • Visits to campus academic support center


Professional Development in Research

Required:

  • Pre-research seminar
  • One summer research project (cannot be combined with summer coursework or a summer job)
  • Midterm progress report
  • Research paper
  • Campus presentation of research

Optional:

  • Semester research project utilizing other campus funding such as work-study or wages
  • Conference research presentations


Graduate School Application Support

Required:

  • Individual consultation on personal statement & application essay
  • Graduate school visits or Graduate School Fair attendance
  • GRE general exam course

Optional:

  • Practice interviews
  • Fellowship application support
  • Audit of a graduate level course

TRiO / McNair
The McNair Scholars Program is a federal Trio program funded through a grant from the US Department of Education.
