The McNair Scholars Program is committed to helping UVM undergraduates prepare for graduate school and ultimately, to earn a doctorate. To promote this success, participation is required in certain activities appropriate to all future graduate students. Additional, optional services are also available and highly recommended.
Required:
- Mandatory meeting once a semester with the Program Coordinator to assess academic progress
- Development of an action plan that identifies barriers to educational advancement and prescribes courses of action to address those barriers
- Tutor Assignments if grades fall below minimum standards
Optional:
- Individual work on critical writing, thinking and reading skills
- Audit or enrollment in an undergraduate course in an identified need area
- Career counseling
- Personality/career testing
- Visits to campus academic support center
Required:
- Pre-research seminar
- One summer research project (cannot be combined with summer coursework or a summer job)
- Midterm progress report
- Research paper
- Campus presentation of research
Optional:
- Semester research project utilizing other campus funding such as work-study or wages
- Conference research presentations
Required:
- Individual consultation on personal statement & application essay
- Graduate school visits or Graduate School Fair attendance
- GRE general exam course
Optional:
- Practice interviews
- Fellowship application support
- Audit of a graduate level course
