Honors, Awards and Community Service
McNair Scholars at UVM participate in many different activities. Because of their
involvement on campus, McNair Scholars often receive recognition throughout their
academic experiences. This list is organized by cohort year - the year the
undergraduate was admitted to McNair and participated in summer research. Here is but
a sampling of honors, awards and community service activities:
2006 Cohort:
- Rachel Fredette was inducted into the Tri Beta Honors Society in Biology
- David Lucero was awarded a URECA Grant for Research during the 2004 - 2005 academic
year
- Kesha Ram was elected to serve as a senator to the Student Government Association
during the 2005 - 2006 academic year
- Kesha Ram spent the fall of 2006 in an internship in Washington, DC in the office
of Senator Diane Feinstein, D-California
2005 Cohort:
- Daniel Aguek was inducted into the Omicron Delta Epsilon Honors Society in
Economics
- Daniel Aguek received a travel scholarship to attend the Global Leaders Summit at
Yale University in the summer of 2005
- Abraham Awolich received the $20,000 Samuel Huntington Public Service Award from
the National Grid following a national competition and used the funds to travel to
Sudan to begin a service project to rebuild that nation's high schools
- Abraham Awolich received the W. A. Haviland Medal for Outstanding Achievement in
Anthropology
- Natalia Fajardo was awarded the Mary Jean Simpson Award for the Class of 2006, an
honor recognizing the senior woman who exhibits the highest qualities of leadership,
academic competence and character
- Natalia Fajardo was awarded a URECA Grant for Research during the 2005 - 2006
academic year
- Natalia Fajardo was elected to serve as a senator to the Student Government
Association during the 2005 - 2006 academic year
- Natalia Fajardo was awarded a travel scholarship to present her research in the
spring of 2006 at a national annual conference hosted by the Center for Biodiversity
and Conservation at the Museum of Natural History in New York City
- Rachel Lacy was selected for Arts & Sciences College Honors in 2005 - 2006
- Rachel Lacy was a member of Mortar Board from 2004 through 2006, a national honor
society for distinguished ability and achievement in scholarship, leadership and
service
- Rachel Lacy was elected president of the Pre-Health Club for the 2005 - 2006
academic year
- Jaime LeClerc was inducted into the Golden Key Honor Society and is its Treasurer
for the 2006 - 2007 academic year
- Mellisa Ly was awarded a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the
University of Connecticut during the summer of 2006
- Heather Taylor received a travel scholarship from the University of Michigan to
attend its Engineering Preview Program in the fall of 2005
- Heather Taylor was awarded a URECA Grant for Research during the 2005 - 2006
academic year
- Heather Taylor was awarded a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at UC
Berkeley during the summer of 2006
- Heather Taylor was elected president of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic
Engineers (IEEE ) at UVM for the 2006 - 2007 academic year
- Anastasia Yarbrough was awarded a URECA Grant for Research for the summer of 2006
2004 Cohort:
- Dominick Lemas received an Academic Programs in Learning & Engagement (APLE)
Award from the College of Arts and Sciences to conduct research during the summer of 2005
- Evan Litwin was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta, the International Sociology Honors
Society and into Gamma Theta Upsilon, the Geography Honors Society
- Lisa Weiss received the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research from the Plant
Biology Department in 2005
