Eligibility Requirements
To participate in the McNair Scholars Program, the US Department of
Education (USDOE) requires that UVM undergraduates meet the following criteria:
- First generation college student from an economically disadvantaged background
(click here for USDOE information on family income levels)
- OR From an ethnic group underrepresented in doctoral programs
(African-American / Black, Hispanic / Latino, Native American / Alaskan, Native
Hawaiian / Pacific Islander, or Blended Ethnicity from list above)
In addition, the USDOE requires that all candidates must:
- Hold US citizenship or a permanent residency visa
- Have attained at least sophomore status at the time of application (junior
status preferred)
- Document a record of academic achievement
- Be committed to attending graduate school with the goal of earning a
doctorate
