Apply to Become a UVM McNair Scholar
If you meet eligibility requirements as
defined by the US Department of Education, you are encouraged to apply officially to
the UVM McNair Scholars Program.
First Step:
Fill out a
Quick
Application and submit electronically.
Second Step:
If you meet eligibility requirements and have a strong academic record, the McNair
Scholars staff will contact you and request that you complete the formal application.
You may obtain an application packet at 237C Waterman, request one be mailed
to you by calling 656-9099, or print off a packet from this web page. Included in the
packet are:
- Detailed Application
- Eligibility Statement
- Signature Release
- Form for Letters of Recommendation - 3 letters are required and 2 must come
from faculty members. Present these forms to individuals who can comment upon the
quality of your work and your likelihood of success in post-bacc studies. Your
recommenders should return their letters directly to the McNair Scholars Program
as soon as possible.

Third Step:
Prepare or gather the following materials:
- Statement of Personal Interest (Please describeyour goals from completion of
your undergraduate degree to the doctorate)
- Statement of Research Interest (Please describe your areas of interest for
research)
- Copy of most recent federal income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040A
or 1040EZ) from your parents (if you are a dependent) or from you (if
you are an independent student)
- Copy of most recent Student Aid Report (SAR), printed from the
FAFSA site
Return the application packet via campus mail or hand-deliver to:
