Film: The New Black

Location: Merrill's Roxy Cinema
Description: The New Black
Presented by OUTRIGHT VERMONT
Thursday, March 20 7:00PM - 8:50PM

in Burlington, VT at Merrill's Roxy Cinemas $12.00 General

The New Black is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda. The New Black takes viewers into the pews and onto the streets and provides a seat at the kitchen table as it tells the story of the historic fight to win marriage equality in Maryland and charts the evolution of this divisive issue within the black community.

Location: Livak Ballroom
Description: Engaging Gender Identities & Sexual Orientations in the College Classroom: Pedagogical Strategies for Success

Description:

How do we decide which terms to use? Should labels be avoided? What are best practices regarding the ascribed versus chosen labels we may encounter?
This is a participatory workshop and so size is limited.

Objective:
• Reflect on the current terminology as it related to gender identities and sexual orientation
• Explore key issues regarding pedagogy and classroom management
• Discuss concrete examples, presenters and our own

Speaker Robyn Ochs

Time: 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Memorial Lounge
Description: Beyond Binaries: Identity, Gender, & Sexuality

This program explores the landscape of sexual orientation, and how we “map” sexual orientation. No two people are exactly alike. Given that, how do we assign labels to our complicated and unique experiences? In this interactive workshop we will conduct an anonymous survey of those present, and we will look at the data. Where do we fall on the sexuality continuum? How do we label? In this fun and interactive program we explore different experiences of identity; the complexity of attraction and more. Note: This program, “Beyond Binaries: Identity, Gender & Sexuality,” includes a focus on gender identity and expression.

Hysterical: book reading by Rebecca Coffey

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Location: Flying Pig Books, Shelburne Road
Description: HYSTERICAL is the fact-based, fictional autobiography of Sigmund Freud’s smartest daughter. The life of pioneering child psychoanalyst Anna Freud (1895-1982) was, by any standards, extraordinary. It spanned two centuries, three continents, and both world wars, and was enlivened by her and her father’s relationships with some of their era's most brilliant minds. More than just Sigmund's favorite child, Anna was his sounding board as he shaped his theories. As he aged, she became his chief protector and a profoundly influential psychoanalyst in her own right. All that—and she helped hide a few skeletons in the Freud family closet. Hysterical reveals two of those skeletons.

First, although Sigmund warned that analysis is an erotic arena that should never be risked with a family member, at around the time that the young Anna began having intense “friendships” with other young women, he analyzed her. In their nightly sessions they dissected her dreams, her memories, and, most disturbingly, her sexual fantasies, ones in which she was beaten by an enraged father figure.

Second, although Anna never publicly contradicted Sigmund’s “wisdom” in the matter of lesbianism, she eventually lived happily and monogamously with American Tiffany heiress Dorothy Burlingham. Together they raised her children. They were together for 54 years.

What exactly happened in Sigmund's analysis of Anna? Was it the erotically charged echo chamber that Sigmund said analysis always is? If so, what effect might it have had on Anna's burgeoning sexuality? On the woman she became? Who was Dorothy Burlingham, this figure that history has ignored? Who were her children? How did Anna manage to love Dorothy, co-parent the children, and become a guiding force for educators and humanitarians, all while coddling her disapproving father as he aged and died?

And why in God’s name did she become a psychoanalyst?

Weaving a good story out of a pile of crazy facts, HYSTERICAL lets Anna freely and imaginatively examine all of the forces that shaped her life.

Booklist has called HYSTERICAL "complexly entertaining, sexually dramatic, [and] acidly funny" and LAMDA said it's "got a plot so rife with tension it’ll make you squirm." Oprah’s magazine recommended it in its June 2014 issue.

I’m a nationally known science journalist and author, and in Shelburne on September 18 I’m going to be reading from HYSTERICAL at Flying Pig Books on Shelburne Road.

COM Health Equity Film Series: Two Spirits

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Location: Medical Education Center 200
Description: TWO SPIRITS interweaves the tragic story of a mother’s loss of her son with a revealing look at a time when the world wasn’t simply divided into male and female, and many Native American cultures held places of honor for people of integrated genders.

Fred Martinez was nádleehí, a male-bodied person with a feminine nature, a special gift according to his ancient Navajo culture. But the place where two discriminations meet is a dangerous place to live, and Fred became one of the youngest hate-crime victims in modern history when he was brutally murdered at sixteen. Between tradition and controversy, sex and spirit, and freedom and fear, lives the truth—the bravest choice you can make is to be yourself.

There will be a brief discussion after the film.

Free and open to the public. For more information call 656-2267.

This group serves as a way to openly engage in dialogues around the intersection of race and sexual identity. We have held film screenings, weekly lunches, dessert socials, potlucks, and informal gatherings/conversations. QPOC ultimately serves as an outlet for queer people of color to come together several times a semester and develop a strong community at UVM.

QPOC is for students, faculty, and staff at the University of Vermont who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or queer people of color. QPOC is supported by the LGBTQA Center at UVM and the ALANA Student Center, recognizing that it is crucial to address the intersections of identities that this group inherently possesses.

To have input and find out more about QPOC, you can join our listserv by contacting Catarina Campbell, ccampbe4@uvm.edu.
