Believe OUT Loud - Tuesday Talk (Faith & Love)

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 6:45 p.m.
Location: Allen House, Rm. 104
Description: Believe Out Loud -- 10/29 TUESDAY TALK, Allen House, 5 - 6:45 pm

What does your faith tell you about your love?

For three days this September, a woman visiting campus spoke out on a range of fundamentalist Christian beliefs, calling out same sex love as sin. As the staff of the LGBTQA Center observed community reactions to her, we decided to collaborate with Cooperative Christian Ministries, UVM Hillel, and QPOC, to provide space for UVM students to talk openly about their faith and their love. We recognize that UVM and Vermont can feel very secular. Faith intersects many other identities, including race, class, and gender. We want to create a community conversation that welcomes the voices of students of all faiths, identities, and traditions.

All students are welcome to participate in this open conversation. Please help us spread the word by forwarding this to others that may be interested.

If you are definitely planning to attend, an rsvp email to elitwin@uvm.edu would be appreciated to help us with our planning.

MLK Film Series & Discussion: BROTHER OUTSIDER

Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Location: Living/Learning Fireplace Lounge
Description: FILM During his 60-year career as an activist, organizer and "troublemaker," Bayard Rustin formulated many of the strategies that propelled the American civil rights movement. His passionate belief in Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence drew Martin Luther King Jr. and other leaders to him in the 1940's and 50's; his practice of those beliefs drew the attention of the FBI and police. In 1963, Rustin brought his unique skills to the crowning glory of his civil rights career: his work organizing the March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever seen. But his open homosexuality forced him to remain in the background, marking him again and again as a "brother outsider." Brother Outsider: the Life of Bayard Rustin combines rare archival footage — some of it never before broadcast in the U.S. — with provocative interviews to illuminate the life and work of a forgotten prophet of social change.

MLK Film Series: JULIAN BOND: REFLECTIONS FROM THE FRONTLINE...

Time: 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Location: Davis Ctr., Livak Ballroom
Description: FULL TITLE: "JULIAN BOND: REFLECTIONS FROM THE FRONTLINES OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT"

FILM Description: This documentary- film is a portrait of social activist and former Georgia legislator Julian Bond approaches the story of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from a personal perspective. “Bond's father was the first African-American president of Pennsylvania's Lincoln University, and the family hosted black luminaries in education and the arts, but Bond recalls growing up in the era of "separate but equal" laws”. Bond also talks about his early involvement with the Civil Rights Movement, his nomination at the age of 28 for vice president of the United States, and the Georgia legislature's efforts to prevent him from being seated as a representative on the grounds that he had not supported the Vietnam War. The film explores the 1963 March on Washington, Martin Luther King Jr., the assassinations of King and John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon B. Johnson's impact on U.S. race relations. On this film Bond also offers his own insights, and adds some personal revelations, such as the fact that he was a published poet during his college years. The film closes with a montage of major African-American figures from Frederick Douglass to Spike Lee.

Film: The New Black

Location: Merrill's Roxy Cinema
Description: The New Black
Presented by OUTRIGHT VERMONT
Thursday, March 20 7:00PM - 8:50PM

in Burlington, VT at Merrill's Roxy Cinemas $12.00 General

The New Black is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda. The New Black takes viewers into the pews and onto the streets and provides a seat at the kitchen table as it tells the story of the historic fight to win marriage equality in Maryland and charts the evolution of this divisive issue within the black community.
