BSU/LBTQA Center Movie Viewing of 'Brother Outsider'/'Noah's Arc

Time: 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Location: Living/Learning Center Room 216
Description: Join us in a movie and discussion of black stereotypes in gay culture. The first film, ‘Brother Outsider’, illuminates the life and work of Bayard Rustin, the “unknown hero” of the civil rights movement who always stood behind the limelight because of his sexuality. We will also be showing a short screening of Noah’s Arc, the first and only television show surrounding black male sexuality with a mainly gay cast.

Refreshments will be provided.

Speaker: Mr. Richard Lusimbo, Researcher & LGBTQI Activist in Uganda

Time: 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Location: Billings Apse (Main Floor)
Description: Join us as Mr. Richard Lusimbo, a Research Manager with Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG) and LGBTI activist, discusses his advocacy and research both in his home country of Uganda and on the international political stage.

Some of his many accomplishments include: leading the the Africa-based research team for the Envisioning Global LGBTI Human Rights Project in Canada, actively engaging with Uganda's parliament over the Anti-Homosexuality Bill, and leading a delegation to US Federal Court in the case of SMUG v. Scott Lively--a controversial American author opposed to LGBTI rights who has been advocating for the bill's passing in Uganda. Join us for his 30 minute talk followed by Q&A.

The talk will cover: LGBT people in Uganda past and present; evolution of draconian anti-homosexuality legislation in Uganda; evolution of LGBT activism in Uganda; success, hopes and fears of LGBT activism in Uganda.

Film Screening & Panel Discussion: "How to Survive A Plague"

Time: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Location: Waterman Building, Room 413 (85 S. Prospect St., Burlington)
Description: The LGBTQA Center at UVM, along with our partners, would like to invite both the UVM community and general public to attend a free screening of the new film, "How to Survive A Plague," which will be followed by a panel discussion that our collaborators at Vermont Cares, Living Well, the UVM College of Medicine Gay-Straight Alliance, and the UVM Free2B student group are helping to organize. More information about the film can be found at surviveaplague.com. Seating capacity is capped at 108 people and doors will open at 5:45 with the film starting at 6:00.

Description: The LGBTQA Center hosts an annual LGBTQAwards & Rainbow Graduation Ceremony after classes end in the Spring Semester - complete with music, food, and fun--to celebrate UVM's LGBTQA community, its many achievements, and the LGBTQA students who are graduating - both undergrads and grads - in May. This ceremony is one of the most anticipated of the year. We'd love to see you there.

LGBTQA Center's Welcome Back BBQ

Description: The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Queer/Questioning, and Advocate (LGBTQA) Center at UVM would like to invite students, staff, faculty, and their families to join us at our annual Welcome Back Family BBQ on Saturday, September 7th from 1:00 to 3:00 outside of Allen House (corner of S. Prospect & Main).

Enjoy burgers, hot dogs (veggie burgers and tofu pups too!), homemade sides and main dishes, and of course our famous candy and caramel apple-making station with apples from the UVM Horticulture Farm! Come listen to great music, have fun, and connect with the LGBTQ & Ally community at UVM. This is a well-attended event and a great opportunity to meet new and old friends.
