20th Annual Hispanic Forum to Examine Issues of Gender and Sexuality

The Department of Romance Language and Linguistics is presenting its 20th annual Hispanic Forum: “’Maricoñerías’: Queer Spain/Queer Vermont & Beyond" on Thursday, Oct. 17 and Friday, Oct. 18. All events are free and open to the public. Most sessions will be held in Memorial Lounge, Waterman Building, unless noted in the full schedule of events.

The keynote speaker is Paul Julian Smith, distinguished professor, Graduate Center, CUNY and an expert on the films of Pedro Almodóvar. He will address “Prisoners of Love: Men in Crisis in Spanish (and Mexican) Film and TV.” Three of Almodóvar’s works will be screened during the forum, in addition to a screening of Marilyn Solaya’s In the Wrong Body: Whose Gender is it Anyway?, followed by a question and answer session with the Cuban filmmaker.

“This year’s theme blurs limits, reflecting on queer issues and celebrating connections through geographies, genders, languages and media,” says Professor Tina Escaja, who is organizing the 2013 forum.

The event is made possible with additional support from the ALANA U.S. Ethnic Studies Program; the College of Arts & Sciences; the Departments of English, German and Russian, and Theatre; Gender, Sexuality, & Women’s Studies; Latin American & Caribbean Studies; Middlebury College Department of Spanish; and the Office of the Vice President for Human Resources, Diversity and Multicultural Affairs.
