Career Spotlight

Accounting

Overview The number of businesses is increasing and international trade is expanding, all while tax laws and financial regulations are becoming more complex. Add to that the increased public scrutiny of the financial dealings of private corporations, healthcare organizations, state and local government, educational institutions and nonprofit groups, and you can see why Vermont will need even more accountants and auditors; the state is expected to see a 10 percent increase in new jobs in the field by 2016. Nationally, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists accountants and auditors as among the fastest-growing occupations — a projected 18 percent increase in the number of positions by 2016.

Other jobs requiring an accounting background are growing as well, according to the BLS: budget analysts, projected to increase 7 percent; tax examiners, collectors, and revenue agents, 2 percent; financial managers, 13 percent; and financial analysts and personal financial advisors, both 37 percent. (In many cases, financial manager, financial analyst and personal financial advisor positions also may require MBAs; check out UVM's pre-MBA program.)

Careers: Every business, institution, nonprofit group and government agency needs help with budgeting, planning, tax analysis, employee compensation, development and asset management — not to mention, auditing the books.

Accountants and auditors enjoy enormous flexibility in where they work, what they do and how much they work. They may be employed on staff or as contracted consultants, and as generalists or specialists; they may work full or part time, throughout the year or just during tax season.

They also may pursue careers as personal financial advisors or university faculty members, or in corporate management as controllers, chief financial officers or vice presidents.

Salaries: In Vermont, financial managers are among the top 25 highest paid occupations, with an average annual salary of about $103,000, according to the BLS. Accountants and auditors in the state average $59,000 annually — and are among the high -wage jobs with the most openings through 2016. Other salaries include budget analysts (average of $57,000); personal financial advisors and financial analysts (both $74,000); cost estimators ($59,000); loan officers ($54,000); tax examiners, collectors, and revenue agents ($50,000); and claims adjusters, examiners, and investigators ($60,000).

UVM's program: Our CPA Sequence allows you to become a certified public accountant without obtaining a degree — a benefit afforded by Vermont state law. Seven courses cover business law, federal taxation, and auditing and accounting topics. Prerequisites are required in some courses.

You also may want to consider our Master in Accountancy (MAcc) Course Sequence or our Pre-MBA Sequence, which allows you to fulfill the necessary prerequisites for UVM's MBA Program.
