There is no set definition of ""civic engagement" or "community service." We believe that students define these terms based on their own unique experiences. We use the Break Away active citizen continuum, which encourages students to approach citizenship through many types of civic engagement: from politics, to community organizing, to volunteering, to being a good neighbor. Here at UVM we strive to offer many different types of opportunities for students to create these experiences.
Students can choose what works for them: mentoring, service projects, participating in civic affairs in the community, or taking action around social justice issues. We go to great lengths to offer all students at UVM a chance to learn how and actually make a difference in the world. Together we hope that we can address local, state, national, and international community issues and show the impact that UVM students can have on the world.
