Assigned Journal Questions

You should post your answers to the following questions by the date assigned (Friday of each week). Your answers should be thoughtful and respond to the posted answers of your classmates and ideas raised in class discussion whenever possible. If you wish to use your reponses to these questions as one of your regular journal entries, print them out and submit them with your notebook. Immediately after you subscribe to the list you should send a message that includes the following information:

February 9: Which of Marie's lays is your favorite? Why?

February 16: What difficulties do you have reading Middle English?

February 23: What specifically did you learn from Dr. Hodges's lecture and class visit?

March 6: Do Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and Morte Arthur share any common themes? If so, what and how? March 15: Does hearing the works performed change the way you read medieval lyrics? Why or why not?

March 29: What relationship does Bernard establish with the Virgin? Does this relationship resemble any others you've encountered so far this semester?

April 5: How do the York Plays treat their Biblical source material?

April 12: In what ways does the York cycle resemble Duccio's Maesta (you can find this on the Web site)

April 19: How many meanings does the Pearl poet ascribe to the word "pearl"? Describe the significance of each individual meaning, as well as that of the composite meaning.

April 26: Identify a theme or idea found in Bernard's sermons or the York plays that Julian elaborates on in her showings. How does Julian give us a different perspective on your chosen idea?
