Invitation to Participate in a study titled: PARENTING WITH
A PARTNER
Directed by: Professor Lynne A. Bond and Melanie McConnell, The University
of Vermont, Burlington VT
Dear Parent,
You are invited to participate in
a study about parenting. We are specifically interested in how parents work
together as they go about their lives. This is an exciting opportunity to
provide accurate information about parenting and couple relationships in
a wide range of types of families, an area that has been largely ignored
in the past. We are hoping to recruit 760 parents to participate in this
study. We hope you will agree to be one of them!
Who can participate in the study?
You are eligible to participate in
this study if:
(1) you are currently
raising a child who is between 5 and 10 years old,
(2) you have been
raising this child with an adult partner since the child was 18 months old
or younger,
(3) you have been
in your coparenting relationship with your adult partner for at least 5 years.
What does participation involve?
Simply complete several questionnaires
online about your parenting experiences and about your relationship with
your partner. These questionnaires usually take 30 - 40 minutes. We encourage
you to answer all questions, but you may choose to skip any questions you
do not wish to answer.
**We encourage both you and your partner
to participate by
independently completing the
questionnaires online. If you both respond, we will compare your responses
by matching your surveys using information about your birthdates and zip
code. However,
if only one of you chooses to response, that's fine too.
We welcome EITHER ONE OR BOTH of you!
What are the benefits of participating?
It is important that
we recognize and understand the experiences of different types of partners
who are raising children together. This information can inform public policy
and help us learn how communities can better support a wide variety of types
of families. There is a minimal risk that one or more of the questions may
raise discomfort; however, you are free to omit responding to any questions
you choose.
Participation is totally voluntary and anonymous.
Your participation is completely
voluntary, and all the information you provide is completely anonymous. Absolutely
no information regarding your identity (beyond birthdates and zip code) will
be gathered. Once the study is completed, you can see the results at the
following website: http://www.uvm.edu/~lbond/results.html
