PHYS 051/152 Lab Grading Rubric
Each lab is worth 20 points.
Prelab Homework or In-Lab Quiz (5 points total)
The
prelab homework questions will be graded just like the weekly problem
set quesitons except that here the scale is 0 - 5 instead of 0 - 4.
In Lab Performance Deductions (5 points total)
- Tardiness:
1 - 5 points. One point will be subtracted for every minute you
are late past the first five minutes after the lab session
has started.
- Equipment Abuse: 1 -5 points for abusive, careless or negligent use of the equipment.
- Lab Notebook: Five points will be deducted for expecting to do a lab without a notebook.
Lab Report Deductions (10 points total)
One point will be deducted for the following in the report.
- Numbers are not shown to the appropriate significant figures or are not accompanied by the appropriate units.
- Data collected by the author (or others, if applicable) are missing or are not shown neatly in Tables.
- Sample calculations of all calculated quantities are not shown.
- Graphs are missing or are poorly made or indadequately labeled.
- Methods of data collection are unclear, incorrect or missing.
- The connection between the numbers and the conclusions is not adequately made.
- Wrong, unsupported or unjustified statements are made.
- The method of data analysis is missing, unclear or incorrect.
- Inappropriate, incorrect or irrelevant sources of error are invoked to explain discrepancies.
- Not enough evidence is presented to support or refute the hypothesis relevant to the experiment.
Standard Deductions from Lab Report
In addition to the above, points will be deducted from the Lab Report for reasons as shown
- Report is not stapled: 1 point
- Report title is inappropriate or missing: 2 points
- Author's and or lab partenrs' name missing: 2 points
- Report is illegible or messy: 1-3 points
- Report submitted late or electronically: 10 points
