First week  (Jan. 13, 15)
TuesdayВведение в курс.
Thursday - Examine and learn the vocabulary on pp. 1-3.   We shall go over these lexical items.  Read and understand
the material pp. 3-9.   Be ready to do the exercises on pp. 9-10. 

Second week  (Jan. 20, 22)
TuesdayDo the exercises on pp. 9-10.   This means:  prepare them FULLY at home and learn the grammatical points contained
                 in them.  Read to the bottom of page 13 and acquire the grammatical concepts.

Thursday -  Do the exercises on pp. 3-14.  Read Verbs of Location and Position.  Do the exercises on pp. 15-16.  Acquire the information on
                  pp. 16-17 and do the exercises on p,. 17. 


Third week
 
(Jan. 27, 29)
TuesdayOn p. 17 and 18, there is critical information on the use of "generalized personal sentences" and "indefinite personal sentences."
                Read this material and do the exercises.  Pp. 20-21 contain information on one of Russian's most common structures - impersonal statements.
                 Read explanations and complete the exercises on p. 22.  Read and absorb the material on pucntuation: the comma, the dash, quotation marks...

Thursday - Read the material on word order - pp. 22-25 and the comma (as punctuation pp. 41, 42).  the discussion of elent order is material
                    similar to what we discuss in Russian 101 and uses some of the same classic examples.  Do the exercises.  Examine the new vocabulary
                    in Chapter II, Geography.  Begin to acquire it!


Fourth week    (Feb. 3, 5)

Tuesday - Read the “Vocabulary Notes” and “Lexical Studies” pp. 49-56. Do the exercises on p. 56.  Read and acquire what you do not know
                up to p. 62.  Do the exercises.  Watch the first part of the DVD that comes with the book.  (Opening [very formal] Lecture – chapter
                one.  We will watch this together.  You will answer questions on the content as I start and stop the DVD.
Thursday - Read pp. 56-64.  This material discusses verbal aspect in a more sophisticated approach than you have seen before.  Even at the
                advanced level, this is a "bear."  Do the
exercises within the reading.  Finish watching and attempting to understand the first geography video.


Fifth week  (Feb. 10, 12)
Tuesday
Write a composition on geography - your choiuce of area.  The text should be double-spaced, at least two pages and use the vocabulary
                you are learning.  Send it to me as an MS WORD attached file (either WORD 2003 or 2007 [for MAC - 2003 or 2008]).  In class we shall
                watch a Russian video - talk about it and translate its content. 

Thursday - Read pp. 65-73 and do all of the exercises.  Some of this is new material; some is review.

Sixth week  (Feb. 17, 19)
TuesdayRead 74-82.    Pp. 83-87 contain the texts of the videos.  We shall watch the third (education) video in class.  Preview it at home on
                your own computers.  Since the next essay will concern the Russian system of education, learn as much as you can from the video.
                We shall go over the new vocabulary items - pp. 104-106.

Thursday - Pp.  107-112 contain the information on teaching/learning verbs.  You have seen most of this before.  Now it is time to acquire
                skill with these items.  Please do the exercises within these pages.


Seventh week  (Feb. 24, 26)
TuesdayPp. 112 - 124, including exercises.  ORAL PRESENTATION - talk about your education - preschool, grade school,
                 high school, univeristy, major, minor career goals.  Watch the Russian news from SCOLA.   When the SCOLA page loads go to
                the top line and LOG IN.  
Userid:  VermontU10   Password:  Catamounts.  Go to WORLD TV ON-LINE and choose the Russian newscast. 
                    It loads VERY slowly, even with a t-1 connection.
            
Thursday - COMPOSITON - describe the general structure of the russian educational system.  At least two pages - double-spaced - sent as an
                  MS WORD attached file.  Grammar - read pp. 112-120 and do the exercises within the assignment.

Eighth week  (March 3, 5)
TuesdayNo class - Town Meeting Day
Thursday -  Watch the Russian news from SCOLA.  I have set this up so that you need not log into the SCOLA site, BUT the video, which
                  loads in QUICKTIME beause it is in an MP4 format, loads so slowly that you may think your system has locked up.  We will
                  watch this newscast in class and work with it to prepare you for upcoming assignments.

Ninth week (March 10, 12)
Srping Break - No class!

Tenth week  (March 17, 19)
TuesdayRead pp. 185-190 and learn the new vocabulary, whcih we will look over in class.  We shall also watch the video on politics.  Be sure that
                you have done a preview of it.

Thursday - Continue with the video on politics.  Grammar - pp. 189-207 - do the exercises.  Go to the Tuesday, Feb. 24 assignment and download
                a Russian newscast from which you will choose one story for a Tuesday oral report.

Eleventh week
 
(March 24, 26)
TuesdayOral report - graded - choose one story and report on it.  DO NOT READ your report - talk the report.  Be prepared to question presenters
                and as presenters, to be questioned.  If you can make a DVD of the news you are reporting on, bring it to share with the class.

Thursday - We shall view more of the politics video.

Twelfth week  (March 31, April 2)
TuesdayOral report - graded - choose one story and report on it.  DO NOT READ your report - talk the report.  Be prepared to question presenters
                and as presenters, to be questioned.  If you can make a DVD of the news you are reporting on, bring it to share with the class.

Thursday -We shall view more of the politics video.

Thirteenth week
 
(April 7, 9)
TuesdayOral report - graded - choose one story and report on it.  DO NOT READ your report - talk the report.  Be prepared to question presenters
                and as presenters, to be questioned.  If you can make a DVD of the news you are reporting on, bring it to share with the class.

Thursday -  Please write a synopsis of the politics video and send it as an MS WORD file.  Please preview the Ecology video.  We will go over the
                   base vocabulary pp. 233-235, and begin working with it in class.


Fourteenth week
(April 14, 16)
TuesdayOral report - graded - choose one story and report on it.  DO NOT READ your report - talk the report.  Be prepared to question presenters
                and as presenters, to be questioned.  If you can make a DVD of the news you are reporting on, bring it to share with the class.

Thursday - Read Vocabulary Notes, pp. 235-237.  Pp. 237-241 - "to use" in Rusian is not as omplex as it appears...  We will also watch and work with the
                  Ecology video.

Fifteenth week
 
(April 21, 23)
TuesdayNo class

Tuesday -  Class evaluation AND Brunch in the seminar room - Fresh bagels, lox, cream cheese, Nalibow coffee, tea and conversation!


Final Exam Friday May 1 @ 9am in 423 Waterman
