Garden
The
Garden Project
The Campus Kitchen at UVM believes that everyone has the right to eat
locally grown produce. We recognize that there are barriers for people
to access this type of food which include time, money, resources,
education, and the stigma about the local food movement. Our weekly
meals and initiatives will be closely linked to the agricultural
community, and we hope to do this by our three part plan.
Plant-a-Row for Hunger Program
Considered the new version of a can drive, this is a way to increase
fresh, whole food donations and involve community members that have a
garden and want to donate a portion of their harvest to people in need.
Participants will pledge a certain portion of their garden and drop off
the donation at a designated location that will be provided every week,
where the donations will be used in either the weekly meals or in the
cooking classes at the food shelf. More information and the form is
available
here.
Campus Kitchens Garden Plot
Throughout the summer and into the fall semester, the Campus Kitchens
volunteers with plant and maintain a plot at a community garden site in
Burlington. The plot will be managed by the Garden Intern, who will
split their time between Campus Kitchens and Healthy City at the
Intervale. This will be volunteers the opportunity to learn how to grow
food and is a pilot for a larger garden plot at the Horticulture
Research Center in the summer of 2101.
Chittenden Country Gleaning Program
While many Campus Kitchens just focus on food waste in the kitchens,
people are starting to look to the farm fields for salvaging food that
might otherwise go to waste. Once the farmers have picked their prime
harvest, sometimes they do not have the time to go back through and
pick the seconds that are not ideal for market sales. The Campus
Kitchens volunteers will team up with Healthy City and Salvation Farms
to “glean” farm in Chittenden County and divert the
food to the weekly meals or directly to the Chittenden Emergency Food
Shelf.
