...because, "We know there are people in each community who need
nourishing meals. And, we know that every college campus has unserved
food in its dining halls and brilliant students in its classrooms. So
we put them all together."
-The Campus Kitchen began in 2001 by founder, Robert Egger.
The mission of The Campus Kitchen is to use service as a tool to:
- Strengthen Bodies by using existing resources to meet
hunger and nutritional needs in our community:
- Empower Minds by providing leadership and service learning
opportunities to students, and educational benefits to adults, seniors,
children, and families in need; and
- Build Communities by fostering a new generation of
community-minded adults through resourceful and mutually beneficial
partnerships among students, social service agencies, businesses and
schools.
The Campus Kitchen at the University of Vermont is a collaborative
effort between the Community Services Projects, University Dining
Services, and many other department and organizations that supported
the start up and opening of this brand new student organization.
Together we are dedicated to be an anti-hunger resource for the
Burlington community. This will be done by:
- Students taking unserved food from the on-campus dining
halls, produce from the garden plot, and other food donations and turn
them into nourishing meals
- Meals will be cooked in the Simpson Dining Hall during the
cooking shift when the kitchen closes in the evening
- Students will deliver the meals to the Chittenden County
Food Shelf and to other partners in need
Outside of these basic operations students will learn how to run a
nonprofit, teach nutrition education, offer culinary skills to students
and unemployed adults, increase and educate on the issues surrounding
hunger, provide leadership skills to students, and so much more. For
more information come to one of our meetings or sign up to volunteer!
